PPCDN vs Tencent Cloud LEB

This note compares PPCDN with Tencent Cloud "LEB" (Live Event Broadcasting) on the core low-latency live streaming metrics. Competitor details come from its public product docs; check Tencent Cloud's latest official pages for exact specs and billing.

1. One-line takeaway

Both target "lower latency than traditional HLS/RTMP". PPCDN's advantages are lower and more stable latency, free transcoding, a more open ingest stack (WHIP + SRT simulcast), H264/HEVC multitrack publishing, precisely measurable latency (including P2P Delay), and overall lower billing.

2. Overview

Dimension PPCDN Tencent Cloud LEB
Playback protocol WHEP / WebRTC WebRTC playback
End-to-end latency Measured 70ms over P2P direct, 108ms with WHIP ingest, 386ms with SRT ingest (see the latency test report) Officially "millisecond-level / within 1s"; actual depends on link and config
Latency stability Determined by protocol/link structure: P2P < WHIP ingest < SRT ingest; gaps are stable and reproducible Depends on access network and scheduling; typically varies more
Ingest protocol WHIP and SRT simulcast; one-click switch Mainly RTMP / SRT ingest
Multitrack H264 + HEVC multitrack (two independent sessions); player picks by browser capability Generally no parallel H264/HEVC multitrack
Transcoding Free (multi-layer simulcast / multitrack, no separate transcode fee) Transcoding billed per layer
P2P acceleration Supported, with a measurable P2P end-to-end latency (a dedicated P2P Delay metric) No P2P direct connect, no P2P latency metric
Billing Lowest: mainly traffic/bandwidth + storage; transcoding not charged Traffic/bandwidth + transcoding + value-added features, stacked
Deployment Self-host or managed; nodes under your control Vendor-managed cloud

3. PPCDN's core advantages

3.1 Lower, more stable latency

PPCDN is WebRTC end to end: WHIP/SRT ingest, Origin→Edge forwarding and WHEP playback all pass through without decoding or transcoding, avoiding the queuing and buffering of traditional transcoding chains. Measured end-to-end latency is 70ms over P2P direct, 108ms with WHIP ingest and 386ms with SRT ingest: the P2P path is shortest and lowest; WHIP ingest has no fixed SRT receive window (TSBPD) and is clearly lower than SRT; the gaps are stable and reproducible, which points to protocol/link structure rather than noise.

3.2 Free transcoding

PPCDN's simulcast layers and multitrack output come from the encoder in one pass; the server only forwards, and no separate transcode fee is charged. Tencent Cloud LEB typically bills transcoding per output layer — more layers and longer duration cost more.

3.3 WHIP and SRT simulcast ingest

PPCDN supports both WHIP and SRT ingest, and can simulcast:

  • WHIP: WebRTC-based, lower latency; good for a stable uplink;
  • SRT: stronger loss/jitter resilience; good for weak uplinks.

The publisher can switch between them based on network conditions without changing the whole pipeline. Tencent Cloud LEB mainly uses RTMP / SRT ingest.

3.4 H264 / HEVC multitrack

PPCDN publishes two independent tracks, H264 and HEVC (each with audio). Before connecting, the player detects HEVC decode support and pulls either the h264 or hevc track — "one publish, covering both HEVC-capable and non-capable devices". Tencent Cloud LEB generally does not offer parallel H264/HEVC multitrack.

3.5 Measurable P2P Delay

PPCDN offers P2P direct-connect acceleration and can precisely measure the P2P path's end-to-end latency (in-bitstream timestamps + application-layer clock calibration). This makes P2P's benefit quantifiable and SLA-able, rather than a subjective feel. Tencent Cloud LEB has no P2P direct connect and thus no such metric.

3.6 Lowest cost

PPCDN bills mainly on traffic/bandwidth and storage; transcoding is not charged and P2P can further cut edge bandwidth cost. With "free transcoding + self-hostable", the total cost at equal quality and concurrency is usually well below a vendor's stacked billing.

4. Selection guidance

Scenario Suggestion
Interactive games / co-streaming / auctions PPCDN: P2P direct measured at ~70ms — the lowest latency for heavy interaction
Cost-sensitive large-scale streaming PPCDN: free transcoding + low billing + P2P bandwidth savings
Need H264/HEVC co-publishing for old and new devices PPCDN: multitrack with automatic track selection
Heavily tied to a cloud vendor's ecosystem and managed global nodes Evaluate LEB, but include transcoding and add-ons in the total cost
